DragonFly Performing Arts will be holding auditions for Into the Woods on Sunday, January 30th from 4pm to 8pm at DragonFly Performing Arts Center,  473 Main Street in Cairo, NY.   All parts are open.

The director will be Rita Carver, Artistic Director.  This Emmy Award winner has worked professionally in the Theatre for almost 20 years. She has worked in Broadway Theatre - both on and off, Regional Theatre, Dance and Opera - both American and European. Productions include An American Daughter, Once Upon a Mattress, A Delicate Balance, The Sisters Rosensweig, Guys and Dolls, The Pointer Sisters’ Ain’t Misbehavin’, and Paper Moon.

Ms Carver has been teaching for fifteen years.  Recent schools where she has taught include New York University, SUNY Fredonia, Dutchess Community College, and Westchester Community College.  Other teaching opportunities have been at industry trade shows as well as many articles in trade magazines.

  Ms. Carver won an Emmy Award for her work on the “2000 Sydney Olympics.” She also won an Emmy nomination for the “Montel Williams Show” as well as a Silver Axiem Award.  She won a Silver Axiem Award for “Elmo’s World.”  She is also under contract with Focal Press to write a new textbook for Theatre classes.  Ms. Carver holds an MFA from New York University.

DragonFly Performing Arts, a 501(c)3 corporation, is dedicated to bringing Theatre and the Performing Arts to the youth and community of Greene County.  Ms. Carver  said, “Whether on stage or off, DragonFly is committed to bringing the very best in theater to the youth of Greene County, and the community at large.  Training in the performing arts is not only an exciting activity, but an opportunity for any individual to be creative and confident members of our community.”

Dirty Rotten Scoundrels Auditions

Golden Stone Productions will be holding open auditions for all roles for their upcoming summer production of: DIRTY ROTTEN SCOUNDRELS

Auditions will be held at 6 pm April 30 and 11 am May 1 on the SUNY Ulster campus on the Senate Gym Stage with check-in in the lobby of the Senate Gym. Please bring sheet music of a song you know in your key.  Also be prepared to dance if asked.

OZ Auditions

From Stage to Screen is Auditioning the musical "Oz" at 1:00 pm on 5/23/10 at Cunneen Hackett Arts Center.  Call backs 6:30 pm on 5/24/10 at the Arts Center.

My Weekend of Theater

I'm very excited about all of the events this weekend - Auditions, seeing a show lots to look forward to!

Tonight, tomorrow afternoon and Sunday afternoon I'm auditioning Clair Booth Luce's "The Women" with 90 Miles Off Broadway I'm assistant directing again, and am looking forward to the challenges of this show and the new space we'll be working in!

Tomorrow night I'll be seeing Golden Stone Productions "Wizard of Oz" one of my favorite movies (and musicals). Check back here for my review of it soon.

I'm very excited about my next project - Clare Luce's The Women. It is witty, brutally honest, and direct. I love it. Auditions are coming up and I hope to see everyone there!

Synopsis: The Women, a comedy by Clare Boothe Luce, is set in the world of high society wives in New York City during the height of the Great Depression. Mary Haines, the protagonist, learns from a gossipy manicurist that her husband, Stephen, is having an affair with a shop-girl named Crystal. After the news of Stephen's affair is published in a gossip column, Mary decides to divorce him. To obtain her divorce, she travels to Reno, Nevada, where liberal divorce laws attracted many society women wishing to downplay any potential for scandal. While she is in Reno, Mary learns that Stephen has married Crystal. Two years later, Mary, now living back in New York with her children, learns that Crystal has been unfaithful to Stephen. With the help of her friends, Mary sets out to expose Crystal's infidelity in order to win Stephen back.

This dark comedy has the interesting distinction of having a cast made up entirely of woman. The men are spoken of often throughout the play, giving the impression that they are active members of the story, but are never actually seen.Rehearsals will be on Thursday evenings & Saturdays daytimes starting at the end of August. Many of these memorable roles are only featured in a scene or two, and will not require attendance at all rehearsals.

7 Tips to Improve your Audition

Auditions can be a challenge for an actor. I know. Believe me, I know.

It's not easy being on the decision making side of the table either. Every time I participate on the production side I gain additional insight into what makes a successful audition. So I've pulled more tips on auditioning together to make it easier to audition.

1) Be Memorable (in a good way). Dress professionally, look like you take yourself seriously. This is an interview, think of it that way.

2) Be Prepared. Know what you are going to sing and practice it enough to be confident in singing it. Preferably without the words in front of you. It's better to sing well and la-la through some words, and show us you can connect with an audience, then to be hidden behind your sheet music.

3) Make a Choice. Don't be afraid to be strong and wrong. Show some sort of character personality when you read. It might not be what the director had in mind, but it will be more memorable then a vanilla reading. This is easier if you know the show. Check your library... many times you can find scripts for shows.

4) Don't Apologize mid song. We know your nervous. It's okay if you hit a wrong note or are slightly off tempo. It is really hard to judge your skill singing if you keep apologizing every time you take a breath. If you need a restart stop and ask to start again. Most times you'll be allowed to do so.

5) If you get Advice Take it. If a member of the production team gives you some sort of feedback .. sing louder, drop the accent, read it meeker, whatever ... take this gem - they like you enough to see if you could fit the vision of the show.

6) Be Truthful. If you won't do the show if you can't have part X, say so. Don't waste our time, and we won't waste yours. If you won't take a part if your BFF (or daughter, cousin, uncle, son) doesn't also get a role, that's fine too, just be upfront about it.

7) Choose a Role you Fit. This is probably the hardest thing to do yourself. Ask a friend, fellow thespian, music teacher, drama teacher for help. Audition for roles you fit and feel strongly about. For example - I'm nearly six feet tall, for me to play a love interest onstage there either 1) needs to be a really tall guy 2) or a director who makes atypical casting choices - so generally, I look for strong supporting character type roles. Play to your strengths when auditioning, both vocally and aesthetically.

Frank, a small time crook is on the run from the gang he ripped off, and is left for dead in the mountains. He is nursed back to health by an old hermit until his old gang catches up with him in a catharsis of revenge and loyalty.


Roles being cast:

Frank Harlan (late 20s-early 30s): Always looking out for only himself, he has stolen money from his gang and is on the run.


Old Bill (60s-70s): A hermit with no family, he feels a sense of paternal pride when he
takes in the injured Frank.

The Process: Sound of Music Call backs

Sound of Music call backs were today despite the snow & bad weather. We had a few new people to audition as well. I am still amazed by the number of talented young people we had. Call backs ended up being just the children, as most of the adults just fell into place. It also didn't run over as much as both of our other audition days did - Mostly that was because we had fewer people.

Last night I had trouble falling asleep because I was thinking about the show and casting and all the amazing choices we had. I put together my thoughts on how I thought we should begin the really hard process of making some final decisions. This morning I was glad I had that time ... so I was able to offer my suggestions and things went smoothly and quickly today.

I think today went well - It was wonderful to get to spend more time with the candidates. Some stepped it up and were even more amazing then previously and others had a more difficult time then we expected. I'm sure part of it was being in a room full of people (instead of in a smaller room with just five of us. Friday & Saturday it was just the director, myself, the stage manager, the musical director and an accompanist) Today was in front of all of us, the parents and the other candidates. That can be harder or easier, depending on experience and comfort level. Personally, I like it, because it gives me as an actor an audience, and I love an audience. However, I know it can make things much more scary for others.

It also went a lot more in depth, looking at harmony and if people could hold a part. There's a lot of harmony in this show, so holding parts is essential. We tried many many different combos of children - trying to spend as much time as we could with each and giving them an opportunity to shine. Today was easier in a lot of ways because I felt we were better able to concentrate on each candidate. It still ended with lots of difficult choices and discussion, but I'm pretty confident in the final result. I think we will have an absolutely amazing cast, and I am looking forward to getting to know everyone better, as well as working with such wonderful talent.

Everyone who auditioned will be responded to shortly, if they haven't heard already, and the cast will be announced on the 90 Miles Off Broadway website.

I want everyone that auditioned to know that I want to see them again at the next audition - every one! I wish the Von Trapp family had 20 children, so we could have cast more - unfortunately there is only 7 called for in the script.

The Process: Sound of Music Auditions

I am absolutely speechless.

We have had nearly 100 people come to auditions for the Sound of Music in the last two days. I wanted to write an update last night, but got home much too late and much too tired to do so.

We have had some absolutely amazing talent. Almost every single audition was breathtaking in one way or another. We had enough to cast several shows. I wish we could cast more people since we would have no trouble doing so. Today after auditions we decided on callbacks.

Deciding was very difficult. I'm looking forward to tomorrow and taking another look at our choices. We'll be doing more vocal work since harmony is so important in this show, and readings. Tomorrow will end with more really difficult choices.

That's the hardest part of the process on the production side for me. I always wish we could cast more people then we can.

However, given the caliber individuals we have for the cast, this production of Sound of Music should be incredible.

I want to say thank you to all the amazing, energetic, talented people that came to audition. I'd love to see you all at future auditions - and I'm sure I will.

Auditions for "The Sound of Music" on Friday, January 16th, 7 to 9PM and Saturday, January 17th, 1 to 3PM will be held in the Social Hall, downstairs at The Reformed Church of New Paltz on Huguenot Street.

Synopsis
The final collaboration between Rodgers & Hammerstein was destined to become the world's most beloved musical. When a postulant proves too high-spirited for the religious life, she is dispatched to serve as governess for the seven children of a widowed naval Captain. Her growing rapport with the youngsters, coupled with her generosity of spirit, gradually captures the heart of the stern Captain, and they marry. Upon returning from their honeymoon they discover that Austria has been invaded by the Nazis, who demand the Captain's immediate service in their navy. The family's narrow escape over the mountains to Switzerland on the eve of World War II provides one of the most thrilling and inspirational finales ever presented in the theater. The motion picture version remains the most popular movie musical of all time.

The show is different then the movie but the scenes are similar. So people can familiarize themselves with the show by viewing the movie.

Synopsis:
Camelot is a musical by Alan Jay Lerner (book and lyrics) and Frederic Loewe (music). It is based on the King Arthur legend as adapted from the T. H. White novel The Once and Future King.

The original 1960 production, directed by Moss Hart, ran on Broadway for 873 performances, winning four Tony Awards and spawning several revivals, foreign productions and a 1967 film version. The original cast album was America's top-selling LP for 60 weeks.

Details:
Needed:
Mature actors for the roles of Arthur, Pellinore, Morgan Le Fay, and Merlin.

Actors aged 17 and up are needed for the roles of Guenevere, Lancelot,
Nimue, Mordred, and various court ladies and knights.

A boy, aged 9 to 13, is needed for the role of Tom of Warwick.

Performances are September 5 – 21, 2008.
Rehearsals will take place during July and August.

Interested actors should come prepared with a song from the show or from another show by Lerner and Loewe.
Sheet music for the song must be provided.
There will be some choreography in this production so all auditioners should be prepared to dance and wear appropriate clothing.
Readings will be from the script.

Noises Off

Synopsis:
Noises Off is a 1982 play by Michael Frayn. The idea for it was born in 1970, when Frayn was standing in the wings watching a performance of Chinamen, a farce that he had written for Lynn Redgrave. According to the playwright, "It was funnier from behind than in front and I thought that one day I must write a farce from behind."

Details:
Noises Off is "the funniest farce ever written" according to the New York Post. The play follows a troupe of actors in production of a rather silly bedroom farce called "Nothing On". Needed are five men and four women as follows:

Dotty Otley (Mrs. Clackett): an experienced actress facing middle age and the twilight of her career. She plays the role of the housekeeper in "Nothing On".

Brooke Ashton (Vicki): a twenty-something actress, very attractive, who spends a good deal of the show running around in her underwear.

Belinda Blair (Flavia Brent): Belinda is in her 30's and is the only one who seems in control. She's nearly always calm and knows what's going on.

Poppy Taylor: Assistant Stage Manager for "Nothing On". In her late 20's or early 30's. Overworked, underpaid, very nervous but not without her charm. Would do anything for Lloyd (and has).

Lloyd Dallas: Director of "Nothing On". At wits end trying to manage the zany personalities of his cast. Late 30's to late 40's

Garry Lejeune (Roger Tramplemain): Young, handsome actor who can't complete a thought and has a jealous streak a mile wide. Late 20's to late 30's.

Frederick Fellows (Phillip Brent): Reasonably poor actor but likeable. Slightly oblivious and over-sensitive. Late 30's to early 50's.

Selsdon Mobray (Burglar): Aging drunk. Used to be a half decent actor but the years have not been kind. Can't hear all that well and consistently misses cues. Could be any age but played as decrepit.

Tim Allgood: Stage Manager for "Nothing On". Has to be everywhere and do everything. Hasn't slept in days. Could be 20's to 50's

Auditions to be held at SUNY Ulster Senate Gym Stage in Stone Ridge, NY

Show Dates: July 17th-27th, 2008

Seeking musical performers age fifteen and above. Energized and engaging actors with good comic skills and excellent singing voices. Ability to create multiple characters a big plus as well.

Bring sheet music of a song you know well in the key you sing best or you may sing a song from the show. Be prepared to dance/move. They have an audition form to fill out and bring here:

Character Breakdowns:

Seymour: A sensitive, kind- hearted young man who cares deeply about those around him. He can take anything dished his way, but gets fired up if he sees someone else mistreated. He is a comic but, not a clown. He should sing and act well.

Audrey: A naïve, broken, and sensitive gal who although she looks trashy, lives with a heart of gold. She is the only one who doesn’t realize how good she truly is here. She needs to sing very well and be a great comedienne.

Mr. Mushnik: A failed business man who takes Seymour in not out of kindness but, out of necessity. He speaks with a European accent of some sort and should be good with comedy.

Dentist: A not so smart medical professional who enjoys pain; especially giving it. Must be a good actor who sings well. He is a throw back to the greaser type.

Chiffon, Crystal, Ronnette: The greek chorus who know exactly what is going on even if the other performers do not. Excellent singers who must dance very well. Hip, smart, funny and engaging.

Audrey Two: A giant man eating plant with a penchant for human blood. Actually, she is four puppets operated by one actor. The actor should have a

Good comic sense and know some miming. The puppets lip synch to another actor providing the plant’s voice.

Audrey Two Voice: A soulful and rich voice provided by an excellent singer. They should have a good sense for comedy.

Customer/ Patrick Martin: One actor who plays two roles. Will also help with background vocals and puppet work.

Skip, Mrs. Luce, et al. : One actor who plays several roles quickly in succession . The actor should be a good comedian and a good chameleon.

There are several backstage positions to fill as well as a need for extra puppeteers.

The Michael J. Quill Irish Cultural Centre with the Durham Irish Repertory Theater (D.I.R.T.) announce extended auditions for Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, at 7PM, Monday, April 14th at Weldon House, Rt. 145 East Durham. Needed for Joseph are fourteen male actor/singers of various ages to portray Joseph, Jacob and his twelve sons and six female singers for chorus. Auditions for The Michael J. Quill Irish Cultural Centre

Lie of the Mind Auditions

STAR MOUNTAINVILLE GROUP is Casting Sam Shepard’s A LIE OF THE MIND.

Shepard’s masterpiece about tortured love, spousal abuse and the ultimate dysfunctional American Family. Production will run either mid-May to mid-June or throughout June for 4 weekends.

Auditions will be: Sunday March 9th from 12 - 3pm and Wednesday March 26th from 6:00 to 8:30 pm at Mohonk Arts - 186 Mohonk Road in High Falls. Located ¾ mile up Mohonk Road from High Falls Café. Sides will be provided.

Roles:
Jake: late 20's to late 30's, a combustible force and a wife-beater who is obsessed with Beth.
Frankie: 20's to late 30's: Jake's compassionate brother, who attempts to rectify matters with no thought to his own welfare.
Mike: 20's to 30's. Beth's vengeful brother whose solution to the dilemma is violence.
Baylor: 50's to 70's: a man dedicated to life's simple pleasures; sick of life's tribulations.
Lorraine: 50's to 70's, given to great flights of fancy, a veteran of a brutally painful marriage.
Meg: 50's to 70's, a Montana ranch housewife, very devoted to husband and less so to children.
Beth: late 20's to late 30's, Jake’s wife and an actress – a victim of domestic violence, fighting to get her speech back.
Sally: early 20's, Jake’s sister, a spirited young woman ready to take on the world.

Attention Playwrights and Directors

This is something if I had time right now, I would be very interested in (the directing part, unfortunately the only play I wrote was when I was 12 and was tired of the same-old Christmas pageant for Sunday school)

The Brewster Theater Company is looking for directors and playwrights to participate in their fifth Annual Evening of One Acts. Brewster Theater Company's Evening of One Acts is an exciting collaboration of both experienced and new directors bringing to life an entertaining assortment of theme based pieces.

At this time they are accepting all plays with no specific theme. The theme is chosen based on the selections they receive.

Brewster Theater Company is committed to support presentation of original works by local playwrights who are encouraged to submit original works. Each play should be approx 5-10 minutes long with minimal props and staging. Interested directors can submit pieces they would be interested in directing, but may also choose from theme-based pieces chosen by the producer.

The show is scheduled for 3 performances in the first week of June at St. Andrews Church in Brewster, including 2 evenings and one matinee.
