Dinner Theater Saturday to Benifit Gulf Coast

I love it when Theater is combined with a deeper purpose. You can read about my previous thoughts on the subject of local socially conscientious theater here.

The Red Hook United Methodist Church is presenting a Dinner Theater Murder Mystery Comedy this Saturday, August 9, 2008 at 6:00 PM. Dinner will be catered by Max's Memphis BBQ (yum). There will be prizes for solving the mystery as well as a Chinese Auction.

This is to benefit the UMCOR disaster relief mission to Biloxi, Mississippi scheduled for this September 19-27. As many of you know, the Gulf is still recovering from the after effects of Hurricane Katrina. This is the third trip that the volunteers from Red Hook have made to Biloxi.

The Red Hook United Methodist Church is located at 4 Church Street, Corner of Rt 199, Red Hook, NY.

Tickets are $30 and include the show as well as the BBQ Buffet, not to mention supporting a worthy cause. For advance tickets you can call Jude 845-876-6657 or Lois 845-758-1714.

If you are interested in Volunteering and joining the mission team they could use plumbers, carpenters, electricians, painters, and anyone who can swing a hammer and be a good listener. You can contact the team leader Deborah Lamb at 845-876-1213.

'Tis the Season for Giving

Annual Holiday Party and Toy Drive will be this Monday, December 18, 2006 from 5:30 - 7:00 PM at The Center for Performing Arts at Rhinebeck.

This year’s festivities include music, magic, storytelling, treats, goody bags and, of course, a visit from Santa.

The Rhinebeck High School Men’s Choir and Women’s Choir will perform, as well as the center’s own magician-in-residence, Andy Weintraub. Actor Jonah Triebwasser will present a Hanukkah reading and menorah lighting.

The party is free, guests are asked to bring a wrapped gift for a local child who might not otherwise receive a gift. Include an attached card indicating age and gender appropriateness.

Fighting Leukemia - Local Socially Conscientious Theater

I think is so very important that Arts organizations connect with the communities they reside in. Fund raising for charitable causes connects with the community and also makes a difference, in this case in the life of a fourth grader. It is a good situation where the community supports the Arts and the Arts support the community. Especially this time of year, with 'giving' and 'sharing' being messages of the season.

In Rhinebeck, classmates of fourth-grade leukemia patient Casey Heady have begun giving up candy to help defray the cost of fighting the disease. Collections have been taken in the lobby of Chancellor Livingston Elementary School since Casey was diagnosed last month.

Other community events are also seeking to support the family and raise awareness of needs that can help other leukemia patients. Included will be the donation of proceeds from the Dec. 8 opening of "A Christmas Carol" at the Rhinebeck Performing Arts Center.
