Are you a Hulk fan or do you pull for Spidey? Wonder Woman or Wolverine? Hero or anti-hero—or do you root for the villain to carry the day?Who's your favorite superhero?
DragonFly Performing Arts will offer up a few candidates to choose from—with a few twists thrown in—when it presents “We Could Be Heroes”, a Festival of One-Act Plays by Local Playwrights in Cairo from May 14-16. Featured one acts include: Mushrooms by Julius Landau and Dick Sabol, Never a Dull Moment by Renée Day and Ten Seconds by Brian Petti.
The plays are all very different,” says DragonFly Artistic Director Rita K. Carver, “but they all deal in some way with the perception of heroism.” Given the questionable nature of some of our society's heroes, she continues, from immature athletes to immoral politicians, this is a timely subject. From Mushrooms, written in a mock noir style; to Never a Dull Moment, which features an “actual” superhero character; to Ten Seconds, which chronicles a star softball player's violent fall from grace, each work has its own unique voice and story to tell.
All three local playwrights have had plays produced in Greene County and beyond. Dick Sabol’s comedy/fantasy Dying to Get There was developed in the American Renaissance Theater Company in NYC. He has enjoyed the pleasure of co-creating Mushrooms with Julius Landau. Renée Day's adaptation of Alice in Wonderland was performed last January, while Brian Petti's Echoes of Ireland was given its world premier in March – both at DragonFly Performing Arts. Petti also has multiple Off-Broadway shows on his resume, and has two plays published through Amazon.
With this project DragonFly is pointing the spotlight in its own backyard—the writers and actors who are among us, plying their trade right here in Greene County. So whether you're partial to Underdog or the Dark Knight, you won't find many “bad guys” at DragonFly but you will find a lot Of compelling theater!
