Tony Awards Tickets on Sale
If I only had the $200+ dollars to spend to go to the Tony Awards ..... Wouldn't it be Loverly? Someday I'll have the $$$ and the time. Not to mention I'm not allowed to travel more then a hour away from the Hospital per doctor's orders until the baby is born ...

And Last but not least the Quote of the Day from Mr Excitement News
"Legally Blonde the musical opened on Broadway last week. It's a can't-miss for anyone who'd like to see the movie again for 200 bucks." --David Spade

Lord of the Rings Returns

Lord of the Rings (LOTR), a Musical based on J. R. R. Tolkien's epic trillogy opened last year in Toronto, ran for a six months and failed to make back it's $25 million investment. It's being returned to the stage, this time in London at Theater Royal, Drury Lane with another $25million investment. They are trimming 40 minutes and minor characters, subplots and changing the pacing to try to improve the show. Someone sure believes in this show.

The Toronto production was highly criticised for it's running time, (over three and a half hours!) as well as it being murky, and too much to handle.

New Musicals In the Works

There are always a lot of ideas of what can be transferred to Broadway ... from Abba to Spider Man - Wedding Singer to Legally Blond - and everywhere in between. Continuing in that tradition I present the latest!

Shrek the Musical
:
As the third "Shrek" film, which is appropriately titled "Shrek the Third," is about to hit movie theatres nationwide, comes word that a staged reading of the Broadway-bound musical Shrek will be in held in Manhattan this summer.

A casting notice reveals that the readings produced by Dreamworks Animation/Neal Street Productions will be presented July 23-Aug. 3. Avenue Q's Jason Moore will direct the readings of Shrek, which features music by Tony Award winner Jeanine Tesori and a book and lyrics by recent Pulitzer Prize winner David Lindsay Abaire.

Aretha Franklin Musical
:
A new musical about singer Aretha Franklin, the Queen of Soul known for such hits as "Respect," "Freeway of Love" and "Chain of Fools," is being developed.

Auditions for singing and non-singing roles will be held in suburban Detroit in May for a show based on Detroit native Franklin's autobiography, according to Associated Press. It's reportedly to launch in Motown in March 2008.

9 to 5, the Musical
:
9 to 5, the stage musical based on the 1980 film comedy, will take another step toward a wide future with a June staged reading in Manhattan, according to a casting notice.

Producer Robert Greenblatt's exploration of the material is under an Equity Special Agreement Staged Reading contract, and runs June 20-28.

As previously reported, the project has music and lyrics by Dolly Parton, book by original screenwriter/conceiver Patricia Resnick and direction by Tony Award winner Joe Mantello (Wicked, Blackbird, Take Me Out, Assassins).

A New Local Blog on Folk Music

I'd like to announce the launch of a brand new local blog ... Hudson Valley Hootenanny covering local musical appearances from folk musicians. From the site description:

"A place to talk about song circles and acoustic performance places. Having grown up during the Great Folk Scare, it's good to remember those simple songs of the past and pass them along."

Welcome! I'm looking forward to seeing how the site develops.

Willkommen Again? and Locally

It sounds like The Roundabout Theater Company is planning on reviving it's revival of Cabaret. Sometime after Sundays in the park with George. Is it too soon to bring the show back? The same arguments surface as when Les Mis was revived. I love Cabaret, so I wouldn't mind seeing it again (especially with the very tallented Alan Cummings returning as the Emcee).

In related local news .... CenterStage productions are holding Auditions for Cabaret. These Open auditions are being held at the Center in Rhinebeck on:

Monday, June 4, 2007, 7pm
Tuesday, June 5, 2007, 7pm
Callbacks, Thursday, June 7, 7pm

Directed by Emmy® Award winner Nancy Sans, and choreographed by Miriam Mahdaviani.

Please prepare a song (preferably, but not necessarily) from the show, and bring sheet music. An accompanist will be provided. Readings will be from the script. Please wear Dance-appropriate clothing and shoes.

I swear, I'm missing being in all of my favorite shows this year! My little one should arrive at the end of next month, so I'll be able to go back to feeling somewhat normal, although sleep deprived, I am sure.

On Stage in the Mid Hudson Valley May 10 - 13

There are some wonderful productions that are on stage this weekend in the Hudson valley. I encourage everyone to go see one of these shows. Or all of these shows if you're ambitious!

Mid Hudson Valley in the Movies!

Interesting ... a film will be featuring a local house (undisclosed location, of course) in Fishkill, NY. Plenty of older large homes ... and I suppose the Hudson could be considered a "wide river"

"FISHKILL — Plum Pictures will be shooting scenes for the Matthew Broderick film "Diminished Capacity" at a undisclosed location in the town during the week of May 14. Film Location Manager Jeffrey Brown thinks the area is perfect for the Terry Kinney-directed comedy, based on his novel of the same name. The movie script calls for "a large house that's isolated near a wide river,"" (read more)

No Missleading Quotes in the UK

Critics rejoice! ... show marketers can start crying now ... the UK has passed legislation to prevent the selective quoting practices that are misleading. You know the ones .... "Brilliant!!!" from a review that stated "if only it were brilliant ..."

"The legislation, which will come into force in December, will make it illegal to extract a positive word or phrase from a theatre review if that paints a misleading picture of the article as a whole. Lawyers are already warning that producers will have to be more careful in the future when using selective quotes in publicity material." (more)
