World Theater Day - March 27

Julia Roberts previews in Three Days of Rain

Three Days of Rain, a Play by Richard Greenberg, is previewing on Broadway. It's the story of a Walter, who upon his fathers death, returns to New York. He takes up residence in the space where his father and his partner, both architects, designed the building that would bring them fame. It's a journey of discovery into his family's history.

The woman who is playing the leading lady needs no introduction, even though her image is nowhere in the ads and her name is no larger then her colleagues. There is an enormous amount of Buzz surrounding Julia's Broadway debut.

Lestat Official Website

I was looking around and found the official website for the new musical Lestat. The site is full of goodies like video and pictures, although there isn't much in the way of content. It's definitely worth a look.

Previous posts on Lestat include:

Lestat: Post including links to exclusive video interviews with creative team of Lestat, including Sir Elton John and Anne Rice among others.

To Juliet with Love and Hope

There is a book coming out, based off of letters written to Juliet in Verona. Yes, the Juliet of Romeo & Juliet fame. There are a number of people from all over the world who write to her, and a dedicated group of volunteers who respond and find members of the community to help translate if needed. From the NYTimes.

"Dear Juliet ... You are my last hope. The woman I love more than anything
in the world has left me. ..."

"Dear Juliet, I live on the third floor. My parents don't allow my
boyfriend to come to my house. So I have to sneak him in. ..."

"Dear Juliet, my name is Riccardo. I am 10 years old." Riccardo is in
love with an older woman, 14. He saw her in Verona the summer before. Does
Juliet have news of her?

Of course all of the names were changed to protect the privacy of the writers.

Lord of the Rings: Mixed Reviews

Well the reviews are in for Lord of the Rings are in! Broadway.com has short summaries of a over a dozen reviewers. So what did they have to say?

From Broadway.com "... the collaborative efforts of a huge team into the common purpose to bring this story to thrilling stage life as a bold, spectacular piece of popular musical theater that delivers a knock-out visual and aural experience."

From the NYTimes "Everyone and everything winds up lost in this $25 million adaptation of J. R. R. Tolkien's cult-inspiring trilogy of fantasy novels. That includes plot, character and the patience of most ordinary theatergoers."

From the London Times "The stage versions great strength lies in the way its constituent parts combine in an organic whole. Rob Howell's designs, exquisitely lit by Paul Pyant, are achieved with uncluttered economy rather than hi-tech wizardry, and with an emphasis on natural textures and colours redolent of the story's Middle-earth setting."

From the Toronto Star "The problems with this version of The Lord of the Rings are so basic that you wonder how those involved with it could watch it coming together and still not see what was wrong."

From the Boston Globe "The show's international creative team has created a stage epic that is surprisingly smart and visually stunning"

The major complaints seem centered around the show's length, pace, and character development. I can't even imagine trying to take the three books that make the Lord of the Ring trilogy and distill them down to a just-under-four hour musical.

Extreme Theater Fan?

I'm all for the advancement of the theater, supporting the arts, and definitely support charities like Broadway cares. However, I'd never take it to the extreme that this fan allegedly did, embezzling money from her employer to support her theater habit!

More on Lestat

Well tonight was the big night ... Lestat previewed on Broadway, after it's trial in San Francisco. Playbill.com has an article. It will be interesting to see what the reviews have to say about the show. The previous Vampire based musicals Dance of the Vampires and Dracula didn't last too long on Broadway, and didn't fare to well in reviews.
When the curtain goes up on the first Broadway preview of the Anne Rice-inspired
musical Lestat March 25, what's on stage will represent lessons the creative
team learned from its recent San Francisco tryout.

Fiddler On the Roof Review from the Journal

Up in One Productions Fiddler on the Roof opened last weekend, and the Journal had a positive review of the performance yesterday. I'll be going to see it next Friday, so I'll let you know what I think then. I'll also be going to see Rhinebeck High Schools production on Sunday.

Broadway goes Mainstream

Can you name one song that was featured in a Broadway show, that has gone Mainstream? Been anywhere on the Billboard's Charts? Not recently.

Disney's High School Musical is #1 on the Billboard's top 200. It's a big tween success evidently, of course if you know of, or have children between 9 - 14 you probably already know about the musical movie. USAToday Link.

Music Man Auditions

Tuesday night Gale and I went to the Music Man Auditions at Rhinebeck Performing Arts Center. Neither of us auditioned particularly well - mostly due to the fact it was a last minute decision. There were a lot of adorable children, some of which sang better then others, all of which had a lot of enthusiasm. You couldn't help but smile.

The Director is Broadways own Herman Sebek - star of Miss Saigon and the original cast of Cats. He was wonderful with the children, funneling their energy into the direction he needed them to take. I think he would be excellent to work with. Miriam Mahdaviani, star of The New York City Ballet, will be the assistant director.

Although I don't think I'll get a part, it would be an awesome show to do. Casts with children are always so much fun. Children bring such energy and enthusiasm to a production. As a bonus you're almost guaranteed 'family appropriate' costumes, so you don't have to worry about going on stage in a hot glued skimpy dress!

Rizzo as Garland?

Adrienne Barbeau, the actress known for originating the role of Rizzo in Grease, among other things, is portraying Judy Garland in a new fictional show about backstage at Judy Garland's last performance before her death in 1969. The show sounds intriguing.

And Ms. Barbeau, still a commanding physical presence at 60, acknowledges as
much. "It's the biggest acting challenge I've been offered," she said in an
interview before a recent rehearsal for "The Property Known as Garland," in
previews at the Actors' Playhouse in Greenwich Village and opening on Thursday.

Lord of the Rings Musical Update

I wrote a while ago about how the previews for lord of the rings (the musical) were running in Toronto.

There's a couple of mentions of it again in the press: The Toronto Star has a lengthy article about the challenges of putting on a show of such epic proportions, and getting the running time to under 4 hours. Yup. Four Hours ... Lots of pressure on the cast and crew, since this is the premiere. Plans are made for shows overseas ... London, Holland, Germany ... Actors going from Ents on stilts to Deformed Orcs in under 5 Minutes. Hats off to the cast a crew - quick costume changes are awful hard to pull off perfectly.

Then the NY Times slant is much more towards the effect on Toronto Tourism, but does have a stunning picture. If you have time to read only one, read the Star.

It's not only diehard J. R. R. Tolkien fans who are hoping that "The Lord
of the Rings" which is directed by Matthew Warchus, and stars Brent Carver,
who won a Tony for his performance in "Kiss of the Spider Woman" will be as
captivating a musical as it was a trilogy of books and movies.

Well known Musicals Roles and Synopsis

So you've found a audition that you can go to, but you don't know exactly what the show is about. It can be frustrating to try and find the publisher of the show, and search engines don't always provide exactly what you are looking for. What to do? Visit StageAgent.com, it might not have everything, but it can be a big help. (Thanks Gale for providing the link)

Avenue Q - Contest Winner & Pictures

Avenue Q ran a contest in November 2005, looking for a puppet that best fit in with Cast, for a one night performance. And the lucky winner (and some wonderful photos) can be found here.

Maurice Tipo -- a blue puppet with button eyes and a green clown nose -- lived
the dream of puppets everywhere on March 10th by making his Broadway debut in
the Tony Award-winning musical Avenue Q at the John Golden Theatre (252 West
45th Street).Maurice Tipo, and his creator Andrew MacDonald Smith, 22 years old
of Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, were chosen as the top vote-getters in Avenue Q's
nationwide puppet contest, "One Night Stand," which gave one worthy puppet the
chance to make his or her Broadway debut in Avenue Q. "One Night Stand" began in
November, 2005; the contest invited participants to enter a puppet they thought
would best fit into the Avenue Q community for one night only. Hundreds of
entries were received, and the field was eventually narrowed to 3 top winners.

Return of a Classic or Same Old Thing

We're seeing lots of revivals these days, Kiss Me Kate, 42nd Street, A Chorus Line, Chicago, Grease, and so on... the NY Times had an article on revivals, specifically Les Miz ...
But a recent announcement from the megaproducer Cameron Mackintosh may make that old business plan seem downright experimental. He is remounting an old
production in its entirety. Actually not an old production; he is restaging a
very recent production, "Les Misérables," which hasn't been seen on the New York
stage in, oh, several long months.

Overkill? or has broadway just become stale?

Lord of the Rings ... The Musical?

As a big Tolkien fan - I love Lord of the Rings. I'm not sure I'd be able to make it through almost 4 hour musical of the story though. Toronto is where the production is located, and the reviews all indicate that it is "spectacular." The "previews" have been running since late February, and it looks like the show officially opens in may. Visit Lotr.com for more details.

Auditions and Rejection

How do you prefer your rejection? Let's face it, in the world of the theater, professional or community, it's going to happen. Do you prefer the short impersonal email, the emotional call, or a form letter? I know, I know, none of the above... you want a part.

I prefer the phone call, it's a respect thing for me - It's community theater, most of us are either going to school or working full time. Some of us are doing both! We take a huge amount of time out of our schedule on our day off (or evening after a long day of work) to go to Auditions. Auditions that can be crazy to say the least - sometimes a disorganized mayhem with many people showing up for only a few parts, and sometimes smaller more intimate gatherings. When the result is a form letter with our names "personalized". It just feels so impersonal - uncaring even. That's not really the feeling a Community Theater Group should be wanting to foster.

I understand Directors and Produces are busy too, but a personal touch makes a big difference in the way people feel afterwards. What do you think?

Broadway the Golden Age

There's going to be a new PBS special next weekend on the subject of Broadway: the Golden Age. BroadwayWorld.com is going to have special clips all week to ramp up for the premier airing of the special Next Sunday March 12th.

Among the things to look forward to:
  • Monday, March 6 - Carol Burnett chats about her early days in New York, The Pajama Game, breaking onto the scene, why she'd never make it into a Broadway chorus and more...
  • Tuesday, March 7 - Jerry Orbach explains what happens in the theatre that could never happen on screen, the discipline of acting on stage, creating a close-up for the audience and more...
  • Wednesday, March 8 - Elaine Stritch talks about audiences, stage fright, nerves, critics and out of town tryouts all in her usual trademark style.
  • Thursday, March 9 - Angela Lansbury reveals how she almost appeared on stage in Sunset Boulevard, what it takes to be an actor, audiences, and preparing to step on stage.
  • Friday, March 10 - Alec Baldwin shares the differences between acting on stage and screen, directors, tradgedies of art, and award shows...
  • Saturday, March 11 - Stephen Sondheim reminisces about out-of-town tryouts, West Side Story, developing a show, and why many second acts are disappointing!
I am especially looking forward to the Jerry Orbach segment. I loved seeing his performance in Chicago (Broadway's Lost Treasures another PB special I wrote about a while ago) My Husband Timmy, also has watched enough Law & Order that I've become addicted as well. Jerry is awesome on the show and also in Dirty Dancing!

Theater in the Black

As anyone in community theater knows, theaters struggle to make ends meet. The scary thing is that it effects Broadway shows, Touring Companies, Off-Broadway, and of course many of the local theater groups as well. What is it about theater that makes it more a labor of love than a living? I guess there's something to be said for the cliche "Starving Artist"

This article shows an actual expense sheet for a show - details about $1,000 profit a week. There's a lot easier ways of making that kind of money. Good thing we love the theater.

"Bug," the blood-drenched thriller by Tracy Letts, had all the hallmarks of a
runaway success: fawning reviews, a young, hip cast and a movie deal. Despite
running for 11 months at the Barrow Street Theater, though, the $200,000
production barely broke even, only collecting its first dollars in the black -
and there weren't many of them - in its closing weeks in January 2005.
See the rest of the Article and the example weekly financial balance sheet at the NY Times.

Shakespeare or Not?

Okay it's a little spooky. I've never really understood the allure of death masks. I'd rather have a just a memory of a person then a casting of their face after they died. As Reported in the NY Times :

Is a death mask found in a ragpicker's shop in 1842 that of William
Shakespeare? This coming Saturday's issue of the British weekly New Scientist
says the mask, bearing the date 1616 and the high forehead, prominent nose and
beard associated with Shakespeare, could be, Agence France-Presse
reported.

The Power Behind Broadway

Did you ever wonder who makes a show happen? There are literally thousands of plays and musicals written. Some are good, some are bad, and then there are the lucky few that make it to Broadway. There are thousands of actors waiting for a break. Then there all those pesky little details to take care of ... Who are the people who make everything work?
EVEN if you're an avid theatergoer, you probably don't know any of the 20 people
pictured above among the orchestra seats of the August
Wilson
Theater. But in a business often associated with name-brand stars,
diva-wrangling directors and picky playwrights, these are the people who help
bring those characters' talents to a paying audience.

The NYTimes has a feature on the powers behind the scenes.

Results for Chicago

Gale and I have both heard back from Up in One Productions regarding our Auditions ... and as we both suspected - it is again a short, three line rejection email. Sometimes you get the part, and sometimes you don't.

In contrast, Gale told me this morning that she had heard back about the A little night Music Auditions, and she said "It was the nicest rejection" she's ever had. She didn't have a lot of time to prepare, and so was not all that surprised at the call, but was asked back to audition for the fall show, which was a nice, friendly touch. I wasn't able to make those auditions as I came down with an awful cold that left me barely able to whisper, never mind trying to sing.
