There was an interesting article in the NY times today, about Charlotte d'Amboise and her taking on the role of Cassie in the Broadway revival of A Chorus Line.
Previously, she had taken on the lead role in Sweet Charity when Christina Applegate became indisposed, to have the role re-taken before opening night.
So it looks like they're preparing a touring group coming to Broadway this Fall!

How DO actors remember the lines?
Interesting post I saw in another blog. I've never really had a tough time "learning" lines, perhaps this explains why!
Evidently the 20 year study shows that lines are not memorized, the Actor remembers the situation, the meaning and motivations of his or her character, and thus reacts to the situation.
To get inside the character, an actor will break a script down into a series of logically connected "beats" or intentions. Good actors don't think about their lines, but feel their character's intention in reaction to what the other actors do, causing their lines to come spontaneously and naturally. The researchers quote the great British actor Michael Caine: "You must be able to stand there not thinking of that line. You take it off the other actor's face."

Theater Humor
Just a few things I've done personally, and had to laugh when I read the list ...
From the famous (or is it infamous) You Know You Work in Community Theater If...
- you've ever appeared on stage wearing your own clothes.
- you've ever said, "Don't worry - we'll just hot glue it."
- you've ever appeared on stage in an outfit held together with hot glue. (Moon-girl dress!)
- you've ever appeared in a show where tech week is devoted to getting the running time under four and a half hours.
- you've ever had to haul a sofa off stage between scenes wearing a dinner gown and high heels. (It was some heavy chairs going off stage, and a bed going on stage!)
There's more laughs check out the link above ... Thanks to the community theater green room brightening my evening.

Diary of Anne Frank ... With puppets?
Okay, I know this sounds bizarre, but in Atlanta, GA they are staging the classic Diary of Anne Frank (which I saw on Broadway a few years ago at the Music Box), with puppets - but it seems to be a sensitive production, just using puppets as the medium. Link to the New York Times article. Let me know what you think.

Into the Woods
January 14th - Ushered at the theater for Into the Woods - wonderful production! I usually can find something to mention that could be improved on in a show, but this one is excellent, from the set to the costumes, the staging and the singing, the actors and the dancing. Ok, I lied there is one thing I should mention, it does have a lengthy running time, but it's so enthralling you barely notice - I promise!
Based on well known fairytales, including Little Red Riding Hood, Jack and the Beanstalk, Cinderella and Rapunzel, it kicks off with a witch and a curse, and Act I ends with Happily Ever After. Act II gives you what happens after that ... I won't spoil the ending. One thing I should add is there are some ... mature moments.
Into the Woods is running at the Rhinebeck Performing Arts Center
January 13 - February 5
Thursdays, Fridays & Saturdays, 8PM
Sundays, 3PM
Tickets $22 adults, $20 seniors & children

Classical Guitar - David Temple
Friday December 30th Gale and I saw David Temple play at the Center for Performing Arts at Rhinebeck. He is an incredible musician, playing beautiful renditions of composers J. S. Bach, L. Milan, M. Giuliani and some original pieces. He plays the music technically well, has a superb sense of timing and tempo, and plays with such heart. If you get an opportunity - I strongly encourage you to see him (April I believe he will be returning to the Center's stage)
His website has samples of his playing, but nothing compares to watching him!

Holidays and Excuses
Yes, it's been a long time, and yes, I'm sorry. Between the Holidays and the loss of some people in my life the weeks just passed by.
Missing Thespians - We lost two great members of community theater in December, a loss that effected me personally as well. We lost Charlann Molloy on 12/9 and Dick Pierce on 12/11 - my heart goes out to their Families.
My Great Uncle Kurt passed away also that week - it was a difficult week.
